Series Overview
There is poverty everywhere, but there is a type of poverty in a few places in the world where the people are ignored, forgotten, and unseen. Extreme poverty is defined as families living on less than $2.15 per day. These families live each day merely trying to survive and find money for food. Through this series our hope is that we understand the reality that is extreme poverty, and then listen to how Jesus might be calling each of us to help specifically the people of the Korah community in Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of child sponsorship and how does it work?
Missions of Hope International uses Child Sponsorship as one integral part of a holistic approach to poverty, called Community Health Evangelism (CHE). Your sponsorship dollars are used to provide for our children’s medical and spiritual needs, as well as nutritious meals. While these funds are also used to pay for school fees, each child’s parents are still responsible for contributing a small amount toward that cost. This is a key principle of CHE: engage the parents in community involvement and empower them to learn how to provide for themselves. This combination of financial support, encouragement, and accountability instills a sense of hope in our children and their families which helps them to create a solid foundation and gain a transformative education. This education can then open doors to college, university, or trade school, where our students can learn critical skills in order to gain meaningful employment. With an education and a secure job, the cycle of poverty is broken. As our children grow into adults with their own families, they can enjoy lives transformed through the power of Christ, no longer hindered by the realities of extreme poverty.
Within the child sponsorship program, MOHI deeply values the individual relationship between a sponsor and their sponsored child, which allows our children to feel genuinely cared for and empowered to continue moving forward. Our program allows for a one-on-one relationship with a sponsor while pooling the gifts of all sponsors who support children in the same community. Funds are wired over to the respective fields on a monthly basis to cover the expenses for the children. However, sponsorship of a child is more than just financial support. We encourage sponsors to write to their children often and let them know what is happening in their lives. It is a tremendous encouragement to the children to hear from their sponsors and know that there is someone in another part of the world who loves them and prays for them.

Has this worked somewhere else before?
MOHI currently operates over 30 schools in Kenya, stretching from the urban slums in Nairobi to the remote desert regions of Turkana. In 2023, MOHI also expanded into the country of Liberia, serving 2 schools there. Over the next 10 years, MOHI prayerfully plans to continue to grow its ministry, reaching out to other impoverished countries as well.
How are children selected to be part of MOHI’s sponsorship program?
The child recruitment process can vary from location to location but, generally, social workers evaluate children based on their specific needs. Orphans, vulnerable children, and the poorest of the poor are recruited first. Other factors, such as family situation, living conditions, or siblings who are already in the program, can also have an impact on when a child is recruited.
Can a child have more than one sponsor?
A child can have only one sponsoring person, couple, or family. We do, however, allow relatives or small groups to collectively sponsor a child. However, there will never be one child who has two separate sponsors receiving two separate sponsorships.
Do children have to be Christians to be in the program?
No. Children or their families are not required to be Christians or to become Christians in order to be a part of our program. However, due to MOHI’s mission to share Jesus with each person we interact with, students will participate in Christian-based programs and activities. Our hope is that through our MOHI program, and access to a local church, our students and their families do come to know Jesus and build a personal relationship with Him.
How frequently will I receive updated information about the child I’m sponsoring?
There are a few different types of updates that you will receive. You will receive a community update by email once per term, there are three terms per year. Community updates are general updates that are sent out about each community, you are able to read more about the school and community your sponsored child is from.
You will also receive updates about your sponsored child regarding major life updates, changes in schooling, or any other update that may come along. These updates will be shared with you from our Sponsorship Team in the US Office.
Additionally, your child should write to you at least once a year to let you know what is going on in his or her life. You will receive these letters in the mail.
You do have the opportunity to communicate directly with the child you sponsor through your online account. You can send and receive messages that will appear on your online account through our website or mobile app. This is a great way to communicate more frequently with your sponsored child.

Can I send the child a gift?
Yes, you can purchase a gift through the MOHI website using your online account. In order to best serve the children in our program, we have assembled an online gift list that contains items that fill specific needs in our communities. These gifts are sourced in Kenya and are delivered directly to your student. To see what gifts are available for online purchase for your sponsor child, please visit your online account here: mohiafrica.org/login
Once you’ve submitted your order, the team in Kenya will safely deliver the gift to your sponsored child. Your sponsored child will then send a thank you note via mail to show their gratitude for your gift!

What happens if my sponsored child leaves the program?
Due to cultural differences, family issues, illness and harsh living conditions, children may stop attending school, often without any warning. While we hope that your sponsored child remains in MOHI’s child sponsorship program until his or her schooling is complete, we can’t promise that your relationship with one particular child will be able to continue indefinitely. We can promise, however, that your sponsorship plants a seed of hope and faith in the heart of your child whether they attend school for one week, three months or years. And if your sponsored child leaves the program for any reason, we will let you know that information as soon as possible, and immediately connect you with a new child so you can continue to participate in the blessings of transformation.
Our team makes every effort to return a child to the program if they stop attending for any reason. We give children a three-month grace period if they stop attending school. During this time, the social workers and program managers are doing everything possible to get the child back in the program. During the time that a student is not attending, your donations continue to go toward covering the costs for children in the program. If the child doesn’t return after three months, we officially remove them from the program and connect you with another child in need of sponsorship.
